This paper develops and reinforces the skills required to succeed in university study. It provides students with practical skills and confidence in research, writing, technological presentations, and test and exam techniques. In addition, students are encouraged to develop skills in time-management, self-motivation and goal-setting. The aim of this course is to equip participants with the academic skills and confidence to become capable and competent tertiary-literate students.

This paper requires students to attend four contact hours a week, consisting of two one-hour lectures and a two-hour workshop. Assessments should be completed through a combination of in-class and independent activity. Overall, your are advised to treat study like a full-time job, factoring into this the need to adapt to peak and flow-times associated with assessment deadlines. See details further down.

    5. Develop digital literacy through the use of online learning platforms and the creation of digital content.

Assessment

The assessments in this paper are scafolded in such a way that you will receive feedback as you progress. You need to pay attention to the various times and hand-in formats as follows:

Attendance

You will receive marks for this when you attend your workshops. These marks will be totalled at the end of the semester.

Pop quizzes

These will be *completed during workshops and are based on writing related material taught in the lab. You will have the lesson, do practice exercises and then complete the relevant quiz. You gain marks by completing these quizzes and you are also expected to incorporate the material in them into the production of your academic work.

Essay writing online tests 1 and 2 and reading for research online exercise

These will be *open for approximately a week after the related lectures. You will receive reminders and pointers from Dassia and Melanie as these assessments become due.

Learning reflection and exit interview

In various stages as the semester unfolds, you will be asked to set goals and reflect on your progress in writing and through discussions with staff. This process will culminate in an exit interview and a grade for self-reflection related activities. Further information about the requirements of this exercise will be provided during the semester.

The introduction with first body paragraph and remaining body paragraphs with intext referencing

These components of your essay will be due in the weeks beginning the dates signaled below. You do not all have to have these handed in on the Monday of that week.*Rather, they must be submitted to Moodle before you attend your allocated workshop time.

Student problems clips

These are group projects which *your group will present in your allocated workshops (as per above). PLEASE NOTE: YOU MAY NOT FORM GROUPS WITH STUDENTS FROM OTHER WORKSHOP TIMES. If you experience any issues, you need to speak to your workshop tutor, (Dassia or Melanie).

The final essay with conclusion and reference list

This needs to be submitted online. It should be a polished version of the work you completed on previous parts of the essay with the addition of conclusion and reference list.*Please note that it is worth 20% of your total mark in this paper which makes it a very important piece of assessment for study skills. You are advised to complete it to a high standard through the incorporation of feedback which was given for previous parts of the essay as well as tips etc you will be exposed to through lectures and essay writing online tests 1 and 2.

The study skills final online test

This test will be *open for just over a week after the related lecture. You will receive reminders and pointers from Dassia and Melanie as the date becomes closer. *Please note that it is worth 10% of your total mark in this paper which makes it a very important piece of assessment to complete due to its impact on your final grade.
